If you're a couple looking for an outdoor adventure that seamlessly blends scenic beauty, history, and cycling fun, the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail (xNHAT) is calling your name. Spanning 83 miles through the New Hampshire White Mountains from Woodsville, NH, to Bethel, ME, this multi-use trail is a cyclist’s dream and perfect for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. Whether you're planning a challenging bike-packing trip or a relaxed ride, walk, or ski through charming New England towns, this trail has something for everyone.
As a boutique bed and breakfast in Milan, New Hampshire, we love to provide tips for adventures to explore while visiting the White Mountain Region. To help you plan your xNHAT experience, we've put together everything you need to know about its history, biking experiences, amenities, and important safety rules.
The History of the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail
The XNHAT owes its existence to the vision and determination of Marianne Borowski. Inspired by the neighboring Cross Vermont Trail, she dreamed of creating something similar in New Hampshire. Where the Vermont trail ends in Wells River, Marianne envisioned continuity across the Connecticut River, connecting Woodsville, NH, to a seamless route that winds through New Hampshire and Maine.
With unwavering passion, she turned this dream into reality. Work on the xNHAT began in 2019, and by 2020, it was open for exploration, offering adventurers the chance to reconnect with nature during the challenging pandemic years. The trail’s success is due not only to Borowski’s vision but also the contributions of local snowmobile and ATV clubs, which maintain and enhance the trail’s surface for safe, enjoyable use year-round. Today, this 83-mile stretch spans eleven New Hampshire towns and two in Maine, offering riders gorgeous views, quiet glens, and opportunities to explore local shops and restaurants.
From the scenic Ammonoosuc River to the wildlife-rich Presidential Rail Trail, the XNHAT weaves together majestic New England landscapes and welcoming communities.
Marianne’s passion wasn’t limited to cycling; she envisioned a trail open to everyone. Today, the xNHAT welcomes runners, hikers, cross-country skiers, snowmobilers, and even dog mushers during the winter months. Even more, because of the hardpack and surface work, individuals riding mobility devices can enjoy it, too!
Types of Biking and Adventures on the xNHAT
The xNHAT offers diverse biking styles for riders of all levels, whether you aim for a romantic weekend getaway or an ambitious cycling adventure.
1. Bike-Packing
If you enjoy backcountry exploration, bike-packing along the xNHAT is a fantastic option. The trail’s restored sections ensure smoother rides, even on more rugged forest paths. Pack lightly for a brisk day trip, or bring essentials for an overnight experience under the stars. Not in the mood to rough it? Stay at a nearby romantic inn with scenic views of the White Mountains, like The Inn at Oxbow Acres.
You can bike for 25 to 65 miles each day depending on your pace, but don't forget to pause and soak in the incredible sights, from secluded glens to vibrant riverbanks.
2. Fatbiking
Don’t wait for spring to begin your biking adventures. Fatbikes, with oversized tires, allow you to cycle over winter trails. The xNHAT boasts 60 miles of groomed winter paths, giving you a new way to enjoy the frosty season.
